On my recent trip to Whole Foods to pick up some snacks I took a few minutes to peruse the seasonal items that were on display. The best part is all the samples that are put out to entice the customer to buy. Without having to commit I can try different cheeses, cookies and assorted treats!
I was pleasantly surprised when I saw a shelf filled with packages of stroopwafels. Many years ago my friend Maruška moved from Prague to the Netherlands. When I flew over to visit her she treated me to many Dutch treats including the fries served in cones made of wax paper, some excellent cheese but most importantly she introduced me to stroopwafels.
These little disks of caramel bliss are a perfect afternoon treat between meals, for breakfast or even a late night snack! The best way to indulge is to place a stroopwafel on top of a hot cup of tea or coffee letting the steam soften the cookie and melt the caramel that is sandwiched between the wafers. I fully expect when she visits me next year to bring some authentic stroopwafels from the motherland!
